Learning to drive comes with specific age requirements and regulations. Here’s an overview that simplifies the process for you.

Age Requirements

  • Apply for a provisional driving license at 15 years and nine months.
  • Start driving a car at the age of 17.
  • If you receive or have applied for the enhanced rate of the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP), you can drive a car at 16.

Rules for Learning

  • Possess a provisional driving license for Great Britain or Northern Ireland.
  • Learn under supervision by a qualified driving instructor or someone meeting specific criteria, like family or friends.
  • Display ‘L’ plates on the car you’re learning in.
  • Drive at any time, day or night.
  • Motorway driving is allowed only in England, Scotland, or Wales, with an approved driving instructor and a car fitted with dual controls.

Speed Limits

  • In England, Scotland, and Wales, speed limits with ‘L’ plates are the same as after passing the test.
  • Northern Ireland’s speed limit is 45 miles per hour during the learning phase.

Taking Driving Lessons

  • Instructors can be qualified and approved driving instructors (ADI) or trainee driving instructors.
  • There is no set minimum or maximum cost for driving lessons.
  • Check for a green badge for qualified instructors and a pink badge for trainees.

Practising with Family or Friends

  • Over 21-year-olds who are qualified to drive the type of vehicle you’re learning in can supervise your practice.
  • They must have had their full driving license for three years (from the UK, the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein).
  • Using a mobile phone while supervising or driving on the motorway during practice is illegal.

We provide Driving Lessons Instructors in Merton, Kingston, Richmond, Wandsworth, Sutton, Croydon, and Hampshire.

Insurance

  • Need your insurance as a learner driver when practicing in your car.
  • If using someone else’s car, ensure coverage under the owner’s policy or take out your own.
  • Some insurers may require the supervisor to be over 25.

Recording Practice

  • Download a form to record practice sessions without the driving instructor.

Using ‘L’ and ‘P’ Plates

  • ‘L’ plates must have a red L on a white background.
  • Display plates on the front and back of the vehicle.
  • In Wales, ‘D’ plates can be used instead.

P Plates

  • Display green ‘probationary’ P plates after passing your driving test, although it’s optional.
  • In Northern Ireland, ‘R’ plates (restricted driver plates) are mandatory for a one-year post-test.

Understanding these guidelines ensures a smooth and legal learning experience for becoming a confident driver.
